Michigan Compiled Laws

State laws authorizing local planning and zoning are contained in Michigan Complied Laws (MCL), which is located online at www.legislature.mi.gov. Public acts and senate and house bills can be accessed by entering the ‘MCL Section’ or ‘Bill Number’ into the appropriate dialogue box. ‘Act Key Word Searches’ and ‘Bill Key Word Searches’ are also possible.

Chapter 125 of the MCL

Most of the laws regarding local planning and zoning are included in Chapter 125, Planning, Housing, and Zoning of the Michigan Compiled Laws:

Planning – The various public acts providing local governments the ability to plan were compiled into a single act in 2008

Michigan Planning Enabling Act – MCL 125.3801 – 125.3885 (PA 33 of 2008)

Zoning – The various public acts providing local governments the ability to zone were compiled into a single act in 2006.

Michigan Zoning Enabling Act – MCL 125.3101 – 125.3702 (PA 110 of 2006)
