Hillsdale County is located in the south-central portion of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan.  The State's Meridian - utilized by surveyors, land owners and other powers to identify the location of real proprerty in Michigan - is also Hillsale County's eastern border.  US-127 (Meridan Road) roughly follows the Meridian.  The southwest corder of the county is where the states of Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio meet.

The county is comprised of 18 townships, 9 incorporated cities and villages, and a variety of crossroads hamlets and other small settlements.  The townships and incorporated cities and villages are governed by elected boards and councils.  County residents are also represented by the Hillsdal County Board of Commissioners.  The entire county is also part of Michigan House District 16, Michigan Senate District 58, and Michigan District 7 of the US House of Representatives.
