| | Jackson Zoning Board of Appeals | The Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) is charged with hearing requests for variances from the zoning ordinance. The Board also hears requests for variances from the sign ordinance as the City's Sign Board of Appeals (SBA). Variance appeals are considered in relation to the establishment of hardship and requests must satisfy several criteria in order to establish that hardship. An additional responsibility of the Board is to provide the official interpretation of the zoning and sign ordinances. Appeals from decisions of the ZBA/SBA are taken to Circuit Court. | Membership and Staffing
The Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) is comprised of seven members and up to two alternate members (one of which is currently vacant). The Michigan Zoning Enabling Act requires one member of the ZBA to also serve on the City Planning Commission. The remaining members are appointed from among the citizenry of the City by the Mayor with the consent of the City Council. | R2PC Staff Responsibilities The chief responsibility of the R2PC staff is to provide recommendations to the ZBA/SBA on proposals which deviate from zoning ordinance and sign ordinance requirements such as minimum building setbacks, landscaping requirements, and the size of signs. The City’s zoning inspector is charged with administering the ordinances on a day-to-day basis. The Deputy City Attorney is available to consult on the legal ramifications of the decisions made by the Board. Other municipal officials are also consulted as needed. | Meeting Schedule The Zoning Board of Appeals generally meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 11:00 am in the Council Chambers (2nd floor) of City Hall. However, please note that the meetings for February through June will take place on the fourth Tuesday of those months and the meetings for November and December will take place on the third Tuesday of those months.
